ZF 4 HP 22 A Clutch update
We all know, the ZF 4HP22 transmission has a very high failure rate. And most rebuilders know, in most cases, the failure is the result of the input clutch oil leaking where the input- shaft sealing rings have worn into the inside of the stator support shaft. A simple solution is to replace the metal-rings with Teflon rings. Like provided in the rebuilt kits.
Many rebuilders oversee this is NOT the only leak the front pump housing can have. In same cases the failure is the result of the input-clutch oil leaking at the area where the stator support shaft meets the stator-support body.
To check these areas, apply air pressure to the "A" clutch-apply port of the stator support while holding your finger over the exit port inside the stator shaft. A coat of oil will highlight the leak. If a leak is detected around the shaft, the stator shaft must be removed and replaced.
